Cultural pursuits in green Kannelmäki

1960s blends in with modern days

Kannelmäki (formerly known as Vanhainen) was developed in two stages: the older, more spaciously planned part in the 1950s and the newer part since the 1970s. The two main streets in the area, Kanneltie and Vanhaistentie, form a circle around a park, Kannelmäen peruskoulu comprehensive school and a church. Located around 10 kilometres from the centre of Helsinki, Kannelmäki has street names themed on music and the traditional pelimanni musicians of Ostrobothnia.

Kannelmäki Church showcases true 1960s architecture. Completed in 1968, the church’s tent-like structure resembles a tabernacle, the shrine tent of the Israelites, which was light enough to take along and erect in a new, more bountiful place. The shape of the church speaks out against clinging to the past and staying put.

This theme remains relevant to the evolving Kannelmäki of today, as construction in the area continues: the the old Kannelmäki open-air shopping centre will be replaced with new homes for around 600 residents, and Kannelmäki will soon also be reachable by tram.

Going downtown or going abroad?

Kannelmäki is one of the stations on the Ring Rail Line. The station is served by trains on the I and P lines. Helsinki city centre is about 13 minutes away while the travel time to Helsinki Airport is roughly 20 minutes.

Kannelmäki already has excellent public transport connections. Going forward, the light rail network is planned to extend up to Kauppakeskus Kaari shopping centre. The handy tram line will run from the centre of Helsinki via Munkkiniemi to the terminus in Kantelettarentie street.

Western Helsinki cultural centre Kanneltalo

Kanneltalo Cultural Centre is located in the immediate vicinity of Kannelmäki train station. This theatre and concert building hosts several premiere performances and a wide range of visiting events every year. Kanneltalo has activities for visitors of all ages: there’s dance, children’s culture events, music and art exhibitions, to mention but a few. Kanneltalo hosts events, workshops and performances all year round.

The building also houses a library, youth centre and adult education centre.

Kauppakeskus Kaari – a place to shop and hang out

Kannelmäki residents need not venture outside the area even for their larger shopping needs. Completed in 2013, Kauppakeskus Kaari shopping centre is anchored by a Prisma hypermarket, in addition to which it features around 80 speciality stores, a Sokos department store and a food court.

Kartanonhaka recreational area refreshes mind and body

The wide Kartanonhaka green spans both sides of Mätäjoki creek which meanders between Kannelmäki and Malminkartano. A bend in the creek has been widened to make a pool favoured by many bird species that can be admired from a large dock.

Kartanonhaka also has allotments rented out by the City of Helsinki, a dog park and a small golf range. In winter, it is a prime area for cross-country skiing.
